About Kiffets, a PARC Innovation

Play See a short video introduction to Kiffets

Everyone has a personal information diet (mainstream news, long tail specialty topics, professional interests, hobbies, etc.)

But let's face it: people gorge on too much information that they don't want or need... or they are starved because they get too little of what they do actually want or need.

The Kiffets solution

PARC's Kiffets Social Indexing Engine leverages human curators, social feedback, and machine learning technologies to classify and connect Web content automatically.

The result?

...for readers & online information consumers: a more efficient and engaging way to discover, understand, and share relevant information from around the Web.

...for news companies & media publishers: a scalable and cost-effective way to increase the productivity of your editors' curation activities, and match content + advertising to readers' long tails of interests.

Benefits:

  • Satisfies information diets by aggregating and personalizing information
  • Expands the power and reach of curators to form long tail channels for niche audiences
  • Stays up to date automatically by keeping channels current with relevant new information
  • Multiplies the value of content by adding context: related news, reference articles, user-generated content, and more

How it works

PARC's Kiffets Social Indexing Engine combines the scalability of automatic classification with the judgments of human editors. A Social Index (or channel) is a topically organized collection of content that has been seeded by a human curator.

Kiffets learns curator intent from examples and feedback. It continuously fetches new content from the Web and uses machine learning algorithms to match relevant content with the topics inside a channel.

Kiffets automatically finds relationships between topics, articles, and channels. By exposing these connections through its API, Kiffets enables publishers to add related articles from within their network and from the Web to add context and increase reader engagement.

No, it's not the same as...

...other aggregators. Kiffets organizes content along the long tail where other services do not. Existing news aggregators either use artificial intelligence and semantic indexing techniques, or rely completely on social input and voting. Neither of these satisfy readers' information diet needs. Kiffets blends the best of both, relying on human curators to seed the system with knowledge and using automated techniques to scale that knowledge cost-effectively.
